Planning a Destination Wedding? Be Prepared for These Potential Unforeseen Events

Planning a destination wedding isn’t that difficult when you choose to work with an amazing travel advisor, as well as a destination wedding planner. However, no matter how much you plan ahead for your destination wedding, unforeseen events can pop up. You can let those unforeseen events stress you out or you can prepare for them before you arrive at your destination. Today, I am sharing some of the unforeseen events I have heard happen at destination weddings. This will allow you to consider what you would do if they happened to you, so you aren’t having a major panic attack on the day of your wedding!

Planning a Destination Wedding? Be Prepared for These Potential Unforeseen Events

Inclement Weather

You may be imagining a gorgeous wedding on a soft sandy beach in the Caribbean. However, when the day of your wedding arrives, you wake up to gray skies with rain falling for your outdoor wedding.

Hopefully your wedding planner has a plan in place if this were to happen. Don’t rely on luck though. I recommend talking to your wedding planner to make sure they have a plan if the weather happens to be less than perfect for your outdoor wedding.

This will ensure you still have the wedding of your dreams, as you say “I do”. Even if it isn’t on the sandy beach like you wanted.

Flight Delays and Cancellations

We all know that airlines delay and cancel flights all of the time. Storms pop up across the country and other issues come up that can prevent you or your guests from reaching your destination when planned.

You can prepare for this potential unforeseen event when planning a destination wedding by having everyone fly in a couple of days before the main event. This will give everyone extra time to arrive instead of missing out on the wedding.

Pro Tip: Make sure everyone purchases travel insurance, so they are covered in case they do experience any travel delays or cancellations.

Ground Transportation Issues

Depending on where your guests are staying, they may require transportation to your destination wedding venue. It is best to plan ahead to avoid any ground transportation issues that could prevent your guests from arriving on time.

You should also plan on making sure your guests have ground transportation from the airport when they arrive, as well as back to the airport for their trip home.

Your wedding planner can help you arrange ground transportation for everyone, so do not think this is a task you need to complete on your own or leave to your guests.

Vendor Cancellation

Vendor cancellations are more common than you think. Vendors accidentally overbook or an emergency comes up just days before the wedding.

While this potential unforeseen event can happen to anyone, a skilled wedding planner will usually have a backup vendor that can help out. So, don’t automatically start to panic if you discover your vendor can no longer be there. Your wedding planner will have everything under control.

Of course, you may need to make a few small changes when using the new vendor. But that is a small issue compared to not having anyone at all!

Decor

You may have had one vision in mind when it came to your wedding decor, but then when you walk into the wedding venue, it is the complete opposite of what you were thinking!

It is important to utilize technology to ensure you are effectively communicating your wishes with your wedding planner and the local vendors. Consider having video meetings, so you can see the decor before you even arrive at your destination. Even sending pictures of what you want to your wedding planner can be helpful in ensuring the decor is exactly how you want it on your wedding day.

Illness

The last thing you want for your planned destination wedding is an illness. Especially if the person who isn’t feeling well is the bride or the groom!

There isn’t much you can do to prevent an illness from striking. Basically, wash your hands, stay away from anyone who is sick, get plenty of sleep, and eat healthy foods. Depending on the wedding destination, you may want to talk to your doctor to see if you need any additional vaccinations.

Wedding Day Jitters

You can carefully plan every little detail for your destination wedding, but that doesn’t mean you won’t experience a few wedding day jitters when the day arrives.

Your first thought is going to be thinking about everything that can go wrong. However, it is best to relax, enjoy each precious moment, and rely on your wedding planner to take care of any of the unexpected issues that arise.

These are some of the most common unforeseen events I have encountered during destination weddings. You can plan ahead for many of these events while planning a destination wedding, so you won’t find yourself in panic mode on one of the biggest days of your life.
